Jewish and Christmas

If you are Jewish (or any religion for that matter) and have always wanted to know what Christmas is really about, we encourage you to please join us on Christmas Eve for a simple, thorough, and personal presentation of what Christmas is all about.

During this 1-hour service, we will sing carols, enjoy the singing of some enthusiastic kids, read the Christmas story from the Bible, and spend a few moments critically looking at the biblical account of Christmas compared to today's "pop culture" version. Think of the night as a live, and better, version of the Charlie Brown Christmas Special.

As an added bonus, we are giving opportunity for you to email your questions about Jesus and Christmas before the event. Answers from a biblical perspective will then be incorporated in to the message portion with Scripture references given. The night will then conclude with cookies and refreshments.

It is going to be a phenomenal night with family and friends, and we want YOU to join us!

Challenges and Victories

Life as a Christian is never easy, and Jesus never promised it would be. In fact, He promised the opposite. Nevertheless, this does not mean that Christians should enjoy or seek trials, or worse yet, criticize those who do suffer. Suffering is just a part of this fallen and broken world, where people sin and are sinned against. It will either draw you closer to Jesus, or become an excuse for you to run from Jesus. I choose to run to Jesus, which is why I am asking for prayer.

The past couple weeks have been really difficult for the family and ministry. While the church continues to grow and prepare for a larger, more sufficient, ministry venue, it has also been suffered pride issues. Instead of everyone coming to church to give, the majority have come to simply take. As a result, volunteers and offerings are down or plateaued. We've prayed, and I've preached a sermon on the topic, but it comes down to the heart of the people; and that is God's turf.

Additionally, our home has become an infirmary. Since early Fall, there has not been a time when all of us have been well. Sinus congestion, colds, and everything else have been persistent and there seems to be no end in sight. We have adjusted our habits, bought stock in Purell, and have gone from embracing to "fist-bumping," but still the sickness remains. We need divine intervention.

Again, we know there is a purpose in all of this to save even more people here in NYC. It's not the personal suffering that bothers, as it is so much the suffering of others, the Mrs. and the kids. May God grant His power and provision in revealing His healing.

Amen?

Thanksgiving Wrap Up

Wow! If you missed the Thanksgiving Dinner with FHCC, then you missed something special. Over 100 people attended a night of eating, sharing, playing, and even singing Karaoke!!

Taking advantage of our new meeting space inside PS 144, the church rented out the cafeteria to hold the abundance of friends and families invited by the FHCC regulars. Hours before the event was to being people began pouring in ready to assist and serve the community. It was humbling to see so many offer so much with an eagerness to receive nothing in return. They simply wanted to make the night special for others.

When the dinner finally began, a prayer of thanksgiving was offered to the LORD for His miraculous gift of salvation and community in His name. For if it was not for Jesus and His redemption, FHCC would not exist and there would be no influence or friendship of any kind, especially among such a diverse crowd like FHCC. (Seriously, we are very wonderfully diverse!)

As people gathered together in tables of 12, everyone joined in conversation with their neighbor and made a new friend. Kids ran wild, and parents enjoyed with other parents and adults. No one was left of the fellowship, and every conversation was uplifting and positive. It was like heaven...and then the Karaoke machine was fired up!

All I can say about the Karaoke element is "WOW!" Who know we had so many rock stars in our midst!?!? Seriously, it was a lot of fun and everyone kept the song selection to modest and light hearted.

It was an incredible night, and we thank God for bringing us all together. FHCC is truly blessed by the works of God's Spirit and we ask that you continue to be a part of the family.

Thanksgiving Dinner

One of the greatest promises of the Bible is that we have the privilege of being a part of God's family. When the redemption of God takes place in a believer's life, he is not simply saved from the future fires of hell, but just as importantly, he is presently saved from a life of isolation and independence. This is the joy every Christian has in being a part of the "family" of God!

This Thanksgiving we are inviting all of God's family to come and join us for a full-course dinner! We have rented out the cafeteria of local school PS144 and would love to have you, your friends, your family, and even your enemies gather around our Father's table. There is no cost to attend, but we do ask that you practice the gift of hospitality and bring a side dish for all to share. Dinner begins at 4:30pm and we want you to be a part!

*You must RSVP to attend this event due to School Board guidelines. Plus, we want to make sure we have enough Turkey for you!

Genesis

This week our campus gets a new name and awning. It has been incredible to see the LORD take a ratty old storefront and convert it into a modern and comfortable worship center. Rarely does a day go by that people walking by to not stop, stare, and inquire how a church can be held in a such a modern and inviting place. We love how God is using this simple space for His glory.

Tragically, however, there is still a significant part of our community that has yet to enjoy the benefits of the campus. Due to the laws of Halakah (Jewish cultural law), our Jewish neighbors are forbidden to enter a church building regardless of its fixtures of elements. By calling our store its default name "the church," or by posting our church title over the door, we are shutting out the very people Jesus came to save! It is not that there is anything wrong with the title "church," or is it a title by which we should be embarrassed or ashamed of; rather, it is simply a cultural word that the Jewish community has chosen to take offense with and use to keep distance between themselves and us.

What's In a Name?
After much prayer and consideration, we have decided to officially name the church campus, "Genesis." This contemporary, Jewish and defining title will help alleviate the stress and phobia of the Jewish community, and allow for a more level playing field in sharing the Gospel with them. After all, the name "Genesis" means, "Beginning" and comes from the Jewish Bible. What better title for a place from God will start a new work and give new life to all people who call on His name.

Please be praying for this exciting new chapter in the ministry of our church. By God's grace, and through our obedience, many new opportunities lay ahead for the thousands of people of Forest Hills to come to know Yeshua (Jesus) as Messiah.

Football and Jesus

Last weekend we kickoff a new ministry at FHCC, Flag Football. Many were excited for the chance to play a great American game, hang out with church friends, and establish some new relationships along way. Others, however, were not so thrilled with a church adopting a multi-week event of such a secular nature and billing it as an "outreach." The problem is that the first group simply wants to socialize, while the the second only wants the familiarity of religious traditions. Both are wrong, and both need to change.

A survey of the Bible will inform us that there is very little instruction on living a Christian life. There is plenty of "corrective theology," which draws us out of sin and into a relationship with Jesus, but the commands of what to do after coming to Jesus are pretty short and sweet. Essentially, they are "live life under the influence of the Holy Spirit." There is no command for how many times we are to go to church, what kinds of Bible studies we should be implementing or how many street campaigns we are to participate in. Instead, we are told to simply do all things for the glory of God.

Flag football presents us with a great opportunity to live like Jesus in the presence of the unsaved. While others are celebrating their talents, achievements, and bodies on the field, we, as the church, have the privilege of playing of celebrating our friendships in Jesus, rejoicing in the victories of others, and living above reproach when things don't go our way. We get to show the world what being a Christian is all about as we live life under the Spirit in every possible way.

If you are looking for a new Bible study to get involved in, we have one for you. It's called, LIFE, and it'll be taking place this Saturday from 10am to 2pm on the football field. We're going to pray together, play together, and do it all for the glory of God. More encouragement and conversations will take place during this time, then could ever take place behind a pulpit.

And if you think that you can dodge a Bible study by playing football, then you have another thing coming. Win or lose, we play for Jesus. Flag or two-hand touch, either way you are getting a bear hug from Pastor Jeremy. And we don't care whose team you play for during the game, because at the end of day we all want to be on Jesus' team.

This is ministry, this is life!

Christians and Halloween

The Christian response to Halloween is varied, and that is OK. I grew up not allowed to celebrate in any way, shape or form, however, my wife, whose dad was a pastor, went trick-or-treating. Basically, it comes down to personal conviction.

The origins of Halloween are dark and wicked, and certainly much about today's celebration is similarly evil. However, you would be hard pressed to find anyone in our modern day preparing to sacrifice in honor of the Fall harvest season. Much of the origins of Halloween are lost and irrelevant. Instead, modern celebration of Halloween is about getting dressed up and getting candy; not Satan worship.

My official position is: Halloween is what you make it. I choose to use the day to glorify God by being with my family and having fun getting candy and dressing up like farm animals. If a fellow Christian is incapable of doing such, then that is OK too. Each should do what his measure of faith permits him to do (I Cor. 8 and Romans 14).

Missions Update

We are overwhelmed by the response we have received concerning FHCC’s missionary support. Prior to this month’s missions convention, the church’s mission budget was $3,200.00. This meager amount enabled us to support 8 different church planters at a rate of $400.00/year each. While this number isn’t bad, it certainly wasn’t great. If Forest Hills Community Church was to be the church of power and influence for Jesus globally, then we needed to be a church of greater faith and encouragement.

We are delighted to report that the members of Forest Hills Community Church have now pledged over $1,800.00 per month to missionary activity!!! This number is more than quadruple our previous commitments, and is nothing less than a miraculous move of the Holy Spirit.

Of course, this additional ministry of the church will require sustained emphasis through prayer and encouragement; and new strategies are already being developed and implemented. We are so humbled by your response to God’s mission of reflecting His glory to the ends of the earth!!

Baby Dedication

As you know, Forest Hills Community Church loves children! It is simply amazing to know that God would trust you and I with the incredible challenge and privilege of raising another life to know and serve Jesus. While other churches and faiths celebrate children in their unique way, at FHCC we strive to remain as biblical as possible. As a result, we practice what is commonly called, BABY/CHILD DEDICATION.

Throughout the Scriptures the people of God routinely bring their child before the Lord and dedicate their child to His service. This act of prayer and faith signifies that the child has come from the Lord, belongs to the Lord, and give recognition to both the parents and the faith community for being responsible for the child's upbringing in both spiritual and communal fellowship. The ceremony does not make the child a Christian or offer any other salvational effects, but it does present the child as a prominent responsibility inside the local church.

If you would like to participate in our next BABY/CHILD DEDICATION service, we would be honored! The service will take place during our Sunday morning worship on November 7. All you need to do is sign up and invite your friends. As the date draws closer, more information will come your way regarding the order of service and expectations.

Sunday Preview

This week we continue our Missions emphasis at Forest Hills Community Church. Last week we discovered what the mission was, but what about the application? What does it really look like to actually live on mission for God?

On Sunday we will share HOW to live on mission for God. Regardless of where you live or how old you are, there are certain aspects of missional living that apply to all of us. Plus, our good buddy Jed will be tag-team preaching with Pastor Jeremy. You know it is going to be good!!

Bottom line: If we really want our lives to matter, then we must begin living every moment for the glory of God.

See you this weekend for church!

Missions 101

So much of the Christian world is not "Christian"...

This week we kicked off our Missions Emphasis at Forest Hills Community Church. It is always special to be a missionary of a missions endeavor, and then replicate the mandate of missions into new lives and ministries through that endeavor. It's just really cool to see the whole process go full circle.

However, as I approached the topic this year, I felt the LORD call us back to a fundamental definition of the word "missions." Missions is not something that the church created, nor is it something that Jesus began in the New Testament. Missions begins before the page of Genesis chapter 1. Missions is what God does.

All of creation exists for the mission of God: His glory. Man was not created by chance or without purpose; instead, he was created with the highest purpose of mimicking God and revealing His glory. Tragically, man fell from his glorious position through sin, but this tragedy did not eradicate his mission, or jeopardize the mission of God. God's mission remained intact and made evident despite man's sin, and in reality became an agent in God's glory. While God hates sin and its effect, His glory is beyond its effect.

The mission of God continued through Creation making itself truly manifest in the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the redeemer of God's glory to man. Through His glorious life, death and resurrection, Jesus not only proclaims the glory of God, but redeems men through faith to the position lost and abandoned by Adam. He restores us to our mission: reflecting and communicating God's glory.

When this truth becomes realized, however, a great pain rips my heart. If the mission of man is to proclaim the glory of God, then why is it that so much of what we do is masked in humanism or obscurity? Knowing that Jesus alone is the image and glory of God, then why do we do "good things" instead of the "best" thing: preach Jesus with clarity?

Missions is not open to interpretation...its always and only about Jesus.

Prayer Alert

It is no wonder that this prayer request comes during the week of FHCC's missionary emphasis.

We have just recieved word that our missionaries to south-east Asia have a family emergency on their hands. Their youngest son has been bitten by a poisonous snake and is fighting for his life. The father is driving through the night to get to the closest hospital to care for his son.

We know no other details than these.

Please pray for God's servants!

Accommodating Families

A biblical pattern for ministry has always revolved around families. While we rejoice over the expansion of our single-adult ministry, we understand that single people do not stay “single” forever. Currently our Sunday pre-school ministry is running at capacity, and the nursery and elementary groups are increasing steadily. As a church, it is imperative that FHCC be able to accommodate and equip families to know and serve Jesus effectively. Unfortunately, the logistics of both the Midway and Campus locations do not allow for adequate Children’s ministry at our current attendance.

As we head into our third year of ministry, the leadership of the church will continue its search for a more accommodating meeting facility for Sunday services. While a permanent facility would be ideal, what is most important is that the location serves the immediate needs of the congregation. It must be easily accessible by the community, provide ample room and security for children, and comply with the style and length of worship to which FHCC adheres.

Please pray with us for God's wisdom and provision to be spelled out for all to witness. We desperately want/need to be in the center of the Lord's will on every matter of the church; especially regarding matters that involve the location and function of our primary worship service. Great days are ahead!!

Light the Night

Every year FHCC reclaims the day typically associated with evil and mischief.

Throughout the entire month of October, the church will be collecting candy and bibles to give to trick-or-treaters and their families. The campus will be converted into a place of games, entertainment, and information on the church. Our theme will be the "Wild West," so bring your bandannas and cowboy hats!

In order to make this exciting day a success, we need your help! While there is sure to be a lot of fun and laughter surrounding the day, we want everything to be about about Jesus. Please commit to not only donating materials and time, but please join us in prayer that many will come to know the LIGHT of the World!

You can drop off your candy at any service or at the campus during office hours. To volunteer, please email JOHANNA.

You Need this Book

FHCC is committed to seeing the mission and glory of God come to NYC. We love reading and sharing God's Word with others because it is the chief means to this end. However, every now and again a Christian book comes along that compliments the biblical story and serves as a powerful witness to its timely truth and our inherent weakness. Leonard Ravenhill's "Why Revival Tarries" is that kind of book.

"Ravenhill's call to revival is as timely now as it was when first published over forty years ago. The message is fearless and often radical as he expounds on the disparity between the New Testament church and the church today. This book contains the heart of his message." - From Online Review

FHCC has ordered a dozen copies and is currently selling them for only $10 each. If you have not yet secured your copy, you need to do so ASAP.

Flag Football

We love to PLAY together at FHCC!

Missions Dinner and Movie

Throughout the month of October, FHCC will be honoring the biblical command to share Jesus with the World (Matt. 20:19-20).

This Sunday (Oct. 10) we will host a special dinner with food from around the world. Each guest will bring a food item from a different continent to share and experience. The meal begins at 5pm and you must PREREGISTER in order to participate.

Following the meal, we will show a special professional-quality movie about missionaries who risked it all to tell the people of Ecuador about Jesus. The title of the movie is "End of the Spear" and is based on a true story. Due to some intense scenes, the movie bears a PG-13 rating. ALL are welcome to participate and bring their friends for this special movie.*

*Even if you are unable to attend the dinner, we highly encourage to participate in the showing of the movie, "End of the Spear."

Joseph and Potiphar

This week our attention shifts back to poor Joe in Egypt. Being purchased by Egypt's "chief of butchers," our story takes an interesting twist as Joseph enters service into this prominent family. Unlike his own family, the Egyptians love Joseph's divine blessing and approval...especially the lady of the house, Mrs. Potiphar.

Join us this Sunday as we examine the biblical definition of "divine favor." God's blessing never goes unrecognized, but it does not always draw a unanimous response either. Learn how to read the signs this Sunday at FHCC.

Twice a year the street of Forest Hills close down to pay tribute to the business and organizations of the community. Thousands of people from all over Queens attend this incredible event, and each festival FHCC is honored with a complimentary booth to promote the church. If you have never been a part of this incredible opportunity, then here is your chance!

Join us this Sunday from 1-4p as we distribute invites to church, hand out bibles and talk to people about the awesome church God has given us in Forest Hills. You do not need to be a long time member of the church or theologian to participate; you simply need to come willing to serve.

Besides getting to know our community, this event is also a fantastic way to get to know the people who make up FHCC. Email Johanna now to sign up or ask a question.

Worship CD

Many of you enjoyed the live worship this past Sunday at FHCC. The voice behind the music is that of Josh Manarchuck. God has saved this him, given him a family, and called him to minister through music.

Recently, Josh and his family spent a year in Israel assisting local churches and reaching new people for the Messiah, Jesus. An album reflecting his time and ministry amongst the Jewish people has been compiled and is now available through FHCC.

The album, "Bo, Yeshua (Come, Jesus)" is for sale at our campus location for $15. You may also email the church to reserve your copy and pick it up during our Sunday service at the Midway Theater.

Church Meeting

Mark your calendars now to be with us next Tuesday night for our annual business meeting. Forest Hills CC does not belong to any one of us, but to Jesus alone. As His ambassadors and stewards it is important that we not only share what He has done, but how we, as His church, have handled it.

Topics to be discussed include:
1. Church Leadership and Accountability
2. Financial Report
3. Accomplishments of 2009-10

The night will also be dedicated to the future ministry of the church. While the past year has accomplished much, we are only beginning to scratch the surface. Come get a burden for where God is directing you and I in ministry. We truly believe the next twelve months will be our most effective yet!

Campus Volunteer

The FHCC Campus needs your help. As the church continues to grow and new ministries develop, it is imperative that we be good stewards with what the Lord has given us. The campus not only serves as a meeting place, office, and cafe; but also as a witness to who FHCC represents. If the building is dusty, dirty and infested, then what does that say about God's people?

Currently, FHCC is looking for a volunteer to dedicate 3-hours each week to the care and cleaning of the campus building. The church will supply all the necessary materials, and hours are flexible. Please do not volunteer unless you are serious and have already proven yourself capable.

Email Johanna for an application.

*If a volunteer cannot be secured from inside the church, a professional service will be hired.

Busy Weekend

Don't miss an awesome weekend with FHCC!

Saturday: 1-3pm - Outreach
Where: Meet In Front of the Midway
Join us as we hit the streets of Forest Hills to invite people to church and listen to our communities needs. You have no idea how something so simple as standing on a street corner handing out cards can impact eternity. Regardless of your level of involvement in the church, this opportunity provides you the chance to make a difference in someone's life.

Saturday: 3-5p - Tree CleanUp
Where: Meet In Front of the Midway
This week's storm has decimated our community, and we need to help our neighbors. Please volunteer your time this weekend to join us in picking up sticks, clearing lawns, and doing whatever else is necessary to love our community in a tangible way. Please bring Gloves!

Sunday: 10am - Joseph's Murder
Where: Inside the Midway
This week we conclude Genesis 37 and witness the murderous attempt of Joseph's brothers. Without pity or remorse, this envious brothers lay hold of their brother in an attempt at selfish gain. It is an emotional story, but one that will resonate with every living person. The truth is that no one likes a Dreamer...

The weather is suppose to be beautiful, and I cannot wait to see you all this weekend!

Who is Satan?

Many people often ask about the origin of Satan and what role he plays in history. Rather than "reinvent the wheel," I have chosen to appeal to wisdom of John Piper. The full sermon can be found here.

Satan, that Ancient Serpent

Who is this serpent? The fullest answer is given in Revelation 12:9: “The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.” So the serpent in the garden is the devil (which means slanderer), and Satan (which means accuser), and the deceiver of the whole world. Jesus calls him “the evil one” (Matthew 13:19) and “the ruler of this world” (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11). The Pharisees call him “Beelzebul, the prince of demons” (Matthewe 12:24). Paul calls him “the god of this age” (2 Corinthians 4:4) and “the prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2).

Crushing Satan on the Cross

The day is coming, God says, when you (not just your offspring) will be defeated and removed from the earth. The offspring of this woman will crush you (see Romans 16:20 and Hebrews 2:14). That decisive blow was struck by the perfect offspring of the woman, Jesus Christ, when he died on the cross. This is one of the reasons why the eternal Son of God had to become a man—because it was the offspring of the woman who would crush Satan.

The Bible Works!

Luke 9:2-6 "...and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He told them: 'Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. If people do not welcome you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave their town, as a testimony against them.' So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere."

The truth of the matter is that the passage above is the reason why FHCC exists. When my family and I moved here in 2006, myself and a young college intern simply hit the streets at night and talked to people about Jesus. Those who wanted to receive, received; and those who did not, simply were given a kind word and left alone. Looking back, it was like no time at all before we began holding bible studies with 15-20 young people. From that experience FHCC was birthed into the church it is today.

This past week Anthony and I hit the streets of Forest Hills to see God do it all over again. It was a very quiet night with very few people on the street or in the shops. Yet, it only takes one conversation to make the night effective. Within moments the conversations began firing up with old friends and new. We met a group of four young men who were all over the spiritual map. They were invited to church and Anthony was able to share his story about he met Jesus at FHCC. The conversation was fantastic and everyone we met was encouraged, including the couple who wanted nothing more than a "hello" from us.

The point is that the Bible works, Jesus is alive, and there are people out there that God desires to save through our obedience. Let's never forget our roots. Not only was FHCC birthed through the practice of Luke 9, but so was the very first church of Jesus. God never changes, and neither should our obedience and trust in His Word. Go invite people to church!

Meeting Joseph

This week we get back to the book of Genesis and the story of the Patriarchs. Jacob has come home to rest, and it now becomes time to watch the next generation of God's people grow and develop under His perfect covenant. Unlike the generations before, however, all of the children of Jacob will reside in covenant community, not a particular one.

Yet, despite this inclusive nature, God will elect certain children to elevated tasks and purposes. And like before, the objects of His election are never the obvious choice. In the case of the sons of Jacob, God will elect the second youngest brother, Joseph, to lead in very difficult circumstances and times. Like those who have gone before him, Joseph, is going to need to have radical faith imparted upon him if he is to succeed.

Make plans to join us this Sunday or Monday night at Forest Hills Community Church as we meet the Dreamer, Joseph. No section of the Genesis account is as replete with the providence (unseen involvement) of God, which offers so much hope for all of us.

See you this weekend!

GROW at UNplugged

I'm back live tonight, and I would love to see you and your friends with me. Please join me for a very special night of reflecting on the consequences of II Corinthians 4. As stated all throughout the GROW mini-series, this is not a random break from Genesis, but a divine interruption about purpose and function. We have learned much from the Patriarchs, but if we are not willing to apply their hope and function (the proclamation and persecution of the Gospel), then have we really learned anything?

Come for a great night of encouragement. We'll be reading, studying, applying and praying for you, the church, and the future of both. Don't miss it!

GROW: Mini-Series - Part 2

After witnessing Paul's defense and confidence for ministry, he moves on the tell of the results of his ministry. Since the wonders of God are the source of both his salvation and his calling, it is no wonder then that the apostles cites his fate and conviction of being that of the Messiah as well. Ministers suffer.

This week's message stems from a very famous passage of Scripture and a pastor's heavy heart (and I am not simply talking about, the apostle Paul). Those who know Jesus and proclaim Jesus know all too well the results of such a theology and practice. It is compelling and joyful, yet it brings opposition and emotional duress. It is impossible, but is the joyful carried out because it is the essence of the Believer's life! Ministry is unique.

Join us this Sunday for a profound message from the book of II Corinthians. Regardless of where you are at with the Lord or your understanding of Christian theology, you will be rocked by this week's message. Come early, come with a notebook, and come ready to watch things change. I'm praying already...and so should you.

PS> A very special UNplugged will take place on Monday, Sept. 6, at 8pm. A complimentary message to Sunday's text will be preached by Pastor Jeremy. Bring a friend.

Special Night @ Campus

Join us for a special night of prayer at the FHCC Campus. All to often we get sidetracked with doing Christian things, saying churchy sayings, and just being complacent in our understanding of Jesus. God is rocking our world and calling us out of such!

As we transition into the Fall, the Lord wants to appreciate who He is, remember what He has saved us from, and embrace the call that He has placed on our lives. The opening message from our GROW mini-series was a solid punch to the wayward thinking of cultural Christianity. Our lives are to be about more than ourselves; they are to be about Jesus.

Join us for an awesome night of prayer and fellowship. Service starts at 8pm and will include prayer and music.

GROW: Mini-Series

This weekend we begin a 2-part mini-series entitled, GROW. God has been doing so much in our church and community, but it is only the beginning. Being a Christian is not about choosing a religion, or adding Jesus to an existing life. Instead, it's about starting over, fresh and anew, to new way of doing and being. Being a Christian involves being "born again."

As such, it is imperative that every Believer maturity in his/her understanding and walk in life. One cannot simply have an encounter with God and then rest in that initial experience; there must be growth, discovery, and application. Such behavior not only spurs the Believer to greater enjoyment and fulfillment in Jesus, but other people reap the benefits as well. It is little wonder that the Bible often speaks of the Christian as a living fruit tree. When the tree enjoys the water and nutrients of the "Son," the tree not only grows stronger and taller, but others are able to enjoy its fruit and multiply its affects.

Forest Hills, its time we GROW!

Get Off the Bench

Benchwarmers. Often times these are the ones who got the "sympathy vote" to be on the team. They lack talent, size, and/or strength, but someone felt bad and gave them a jersey and some gear. The coach has absolutely no plans on playing them, and for that everyone is thankful.

Yet, there are also those benchwarmers who are benchwarmers by choice. They have the talent and ability, but because of their own fears, anxieties, or ambitions they refuse to get off the bench and put themselves in the face of confrontation. These are the ones the coach would love to see contribute, but sadly they never do. Meanwhile, the whole team suffers because of them.

There are a lot of benchwarmers inside today's churches; however, of there first type there are none. Unlike the wimpy or nerdy kid in Junior High who was the exception, in matters of spirituality we all are nerdy and pathetic. None of us in our own right deserve to wear the jersey of the cross; yet, God has elected us for His team. We are not qualified to contribute in our own right, but this is the beauty of the Gospel! The election of God not only gives us opportunity, but provides all the power to accomplish the task which He has elected us to! There are no wimpy players on God's team, only self-defeated and self-promoting side-liners who refuse to contribute because of their own agenda.

Tragically, the church today is full of celebrity players who care only for their compensation and satisfaction. Unless their conditions are met, they simply refuse to get off the bench. They want guarenteed stardom/success, the promise of not getting hurt, and a perfect record. They know this is impossible, and thus they sit on the bench, drink a cool Gatorade, and watch the rest take one on the chin for Jesus. Of course, when the team does get a victory, these egomaniacs join in the celebration and wait for their ring and photo-op. (I know some may think this is overly critical, but you know who these people are too.) Get off the bench, lean over the plate and take one for Jesus, bro! Advance the runner into eternity!

We love all members of God's team, but we all are suffering because of the foolishness of a few. God does not need reserves, He needs people on the field working sacrificially for His glory. He has elected you and He has enabled you. This calling is not of yourself, so that no man can boast (Eph 2:8-9). Get out there and start swinging!

Recruiting Spectators

In keeping with the whole "sports" theme, I think it imperative to touch on one of the least talked about aspects of Christian fellowship: participation. So often the size of the church is emphasized and marveled over, instead of the number of converts or believers in its constituency. It certainly is wonderful when a church has the kind of influence that attracts a crowd, but if that is all that it does, then so what? Where is the purpose in such a thing? Where is the hope of longevity? The church simply serves as a spectacle.

At Forest Hills Community Church, we want people to "come and see" what God is doing. We are thrilled when the skeptic or person of another religion wanders into a service. We are ecstatic when an unbelieving friend/spouse is dragged to church, but we do not want these people to remain in disbelief or opposition to the Gospel. Spectators are welcome, but we're giving out jerseys!

If you've been attending FHCC for a week, a month, or a year and still do not see a need for Jesus, then please confront your disbelief. If you have a question, then please ask. If you disagree with the claims of the Bible, then state your case and set us all straight. But please do not sit back and simply cheer us on; it's killing you.

Their are typically three reasons why most church-goers do not become Christians, and each reveals a tragic disposition on the part of the non-believer.

1 - "I lack faith." - Perhaps the number 1 reason attendees do not become believers is because they feel that their faith to believe in the bible is simply too small. They enjoy watching others flex their spiritual muscles instead of doing anything with their own faith ability.

2 - "I like the Christian faith, but I have found my own." - I have never understood this excuse. If you like your own team so much, then why root for another that is diabolically opposed to your own. Christianity is not "pluralistic;" it makes no such claim that other religions are equal or legitimate. In fact, it openly criticizes other religions and gods as being works of Satan. We love people of other religions, but we realize that there is only one true way to the One True God.

3 - "I never really thought I could become a Christian." - As hard as it is to believe, some people simply have never been encouraged to leave the stands and put on a jersey. Too often pastors and friends woo the crowd or play to the existing team, never crossing the line and asking for recruits. God forbid this accusation be laid upon the church in Forest Hills; but if it has, then please forgive us.

The Gospel of Jesus is for all, and all need to partake and participate in His life and joy! Grab a jersey and bible, cause baby, it's time to hit the field!

In or Out

Over the past 7 days, the Lord has been moving mightily in His church. It is not that the Holy Spirit has not been present in previous services, but in the past two gatherings, His presence has been unique. In fact, it has been supernatural.

On Monday, August 16th, at the conclusion of UNplugged, the Holy Spirit spoke through our closing prayer and invited people to step out and receive His gifts of healing, tongues, faith, etc. (See I Cor. 12). Several new people came forward to accept the Lord's salvation and healing. It was an incredible night, but unfortunately not everyone wanted to participate.

On Sunday, August 22nd, the Lord spoke loud and clear through the sermon that to attend church and identify with the Christian religion was not equal to salvation. To be "saved" means that an individual has let go of sin and abandon all aspects of his/her former way of life. Being a Christian is about living in the power and influence of God for the power and influence of God. In the case of Sunday's sermon, Esau was rejected by God because He refused to submit fully to the will and mission of God. Tragically, this same sinful behavior is present today...

No sooner had the worship service concluded, than did the Lord impart another emphatic call of action to His church. While Pastor Jeremy was attending to his duties outside the auditorium, the Holy Spirit enabled one of the women in the church to prophecy over the congregation. This biblical practice (see I Cor. 12 & 14) is not a regular occurrence for Sunday worship and certainly is not planned. It is possible only through the will of the Spirit, the enabling of the Holy Spirit, and the submission of a person to the Spirit's desire. All of these elements were in place Sunday morning, and the message spoken was incredible! Once again, however, many received the Lord's word, but just as many were eager to walk away...

God is not playing games in Forest Hills. FHCC is not a patsy, nominal Christian church. Our church is God's vessel and exists to serve His agenda through His means. We are humbled that three years ago He began a work and has sustained that work through challenges, personalities, and religious tendencies. However, now is the time to mature. Now is the time to actually do something. Passions, commitment levels, and personal witnessing need to increase regularly. We have done this at times in the past, but the participation of the church has been limited; this needs to change.

As we go forward under this holy "call out" from the Lord, it is imperative that we continue to live humbly, but also with joyful expectation and faith. God is going to continue to seek and save the Lost, but He also going to continue to seek willful vessels to fill with evangelistic power. Both of these types of people need to be willing to receive from the Lord in faith and humility. Christianity is not a spectator sport. It is a full-contact, 24/7 discipline where the buzzer doesn't sound until your dead.

It's time to get in the game...

Jacob Gets Sanctified

After a disastrous experience in Shechem, God steps in to redeem Jacob and his family from their sin. Jacob's life is not his own, but belongs to the Lord. If he is going to be used by God, and blessed by God, then he must walk according to the Lord's decrees. It's a hard lesson to learn, but after seeing what convenience and enticement can do your life, Jacob is now more than willing to live completely for the Lord.

This week Jacob casts down the sins of this world, and calls all of those in his household to do the same. Come join us as we examine Genesis chapter 35 at Forest Hills Community Church. Whether you are single, married, a parent or a child, the lessons being communicated this week have exponential potential to change your life. God knows you and loves you, but we must be willing to let go of the things that keep us from Him.

What do you need to let go of?

Family Ties

This past week, we examined the debacle that was Jacob's relationship to Shechem. Rather than be a leader and caretaker to his family, Jacob cowered under personal fear and ambition as his family was humiliated and disgraced. Jacob's poor execution of masculinity and fatherhood did more than make him a stink in the nostrils of the community, it corrupted the character and fabric of each member of his family.

The historical family structure is not merely the workings of culture or evolution, rather it is a work of God. The preference for a male leader and provider, a supporting and care-giving wife and mother, and children who learn and submit to the authority of their parents all stems from the pages of the Bible. God has established order in all that He creates, and He does so for the betterment of His creation.

When Dad and Mom are fulfilling the biblical precedent, they are replicating Godly order and security for each other and their children. Love, respect, discipline and authority become visibly displayed and act as motivators for Godly behavior. Children will feel less obligation to usurp authority from Dad and Mom, and Mom and Dad will feel no need to compete with each other.

Exodus 20:12, "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you."

Sons vs. the Father

This week, we encounter a dramatic and horrific scenario inside the Jacob narrative. Now back in the Land with his wives and children, Jacob attempts to live a peaceful life free from outside influence and devoted to the worship of the Lord. Tragically, however, his life of peace is quickly interrupted with horrific sins both inside and outside of his family. How will this man of God respond?

Join us this weekend for an intense study on Genesis 34. Like Jacob, we all strive to live at peace and seem to fail miserably at achieving such. Learn with us how to avoid the mistakes of Jacob and others, and how to remain faithful to God in the midst of chaos and pain. Life happens, but so does God's redemption.

Are We Really Happy?

Our society is so wicked! In a world of "feel good" marketing and "Mr. Roger-esque" mentality, it has become sinful to feel overwhelmed, burdened, or convicted. Venues, books, television, food, medicines, and the like have been created and pushed into our present times in an effort to feed the culture's desire to be happy. Unfortunately, however, happiness is not really the goal; it's all about distraction.

All of the mediums mentioned do not bring about happiness; they merely lighten or distract us from the pain of personal despair and frustration. We have become very weak and very shallow as a culture and society, and I am not merely talking about the unsaved community. Tragically, this ridiculous mentality is just as prevalent inside the church.

The fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Kindness, Goodness, Patience, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. They come from God and are the attributes of God; therefore, they cannot be achieved independently of God or exercised apart from God. Secular joy is not real joy, but an imitation or farce. The same is true of happiness, peace, kindness and the rest. Unless the source of all of these is the Lord, it is mere deception leading to destruction.

Too many Christian churches and media outlets are obsessed with making people happy in the same manner as the secular. They offer classes, sell books with clever sayings, do good deeds, create sermon series and sings songs about prosperity and feeling good. The main focus of the church has become all about making people really "happy."

But some will say: Why is this a bad thing? Do we not want people to be happy? Did God not create us to know joy and peace and serenity? Of course, He did; but not like this...

Jesus tells us that the joy of a believer is doing the will of the Lord. It is a life of repentance and abstinence from sin. It is a life of selflessness and denial of the flesh. It is life in pursuit of God and His holiness. It is the complete OPPOSITE of worldly joy and pleasure. Adopting secular thinking and practice while merely adding Biblical terminology is not what the church should be about. The church must be about the Lord's pleasure.

Biblical joy leads to weeping, conviction and dependence. Biblical joy leads us to the streets of our community and praying over our neighbors and government leaders. The joy of the Lord leads us to truth which means calling out sin in both our personal lives and the life of our culture. Yes, biblical joy more often than not leads to persecution, rejection, and loneliness apart from the world because Jesus alone IS our joy!

Are you really happy?

Who Am I?

"But Moses said to God, "Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?"

And God said, "I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain."
-- Exodus 3:11-12

Last night at Unplugged the topic of the supremacy of God's will came up for discussion. We all agreed that the will of the Lord is the greatest and most wonderful, but debate arose over the effectiveness of the will of God. "Can we prohibit the will of God from being accomplished?" The answer to such a question is not as simple as it may first appear.

Traditionally, the answer "Yes" is given for such a question. Human beings have free will, thus we do not what God commands, instead we operate against His will. As a result, tragic results are unleashed, which cannot be attributed to the fault of God. Therefore, humans beings can prohibit the will of God from being accomplished.

On the flip side, however, there are those who affirm over all the sovereignty of God. They would answer "No" to the above question, seeing that as Lord over the universe cannot be hindered in any way shape of form. Nothing is equal or greater than the Lord, since He alone is above all things, including the will of man. To suggest otherwise, is to suggest that God is in someway limited, and, therefore, not sovereign.

So who makes the better case? Those who suggest that man's behavior is greater than the will of God, or those who ascribe complete responsibility to the Lord? The correct answer lies in both/and, not either/or.

The bible clearly teaches that the will of God is a vast and superior notion. The Word declares that the ways of the Lord cannot be comprehended or perceived by the simple minds of man, nor we attempt to try to (Isaiah 40:13 and Job 38-39). However, at other points of Scripture the Lord declares His will while also commending those who seek after such (Deut 30:6 and Rom. 12:2). Is this a paradox or a contradiction?

It is neither. The full counsel of Scripture declares that there is both the revealed will of the Lord, as well as the unspoken will of God. The first is that which the Lord grants to man through His prophets and revelations so that man may know the redemption and standards of God. This is the will of the Lord that can be broken.

However, His unrevealed will is that which under girds all of creation. It is this perfect and supreme will that man cannot fathom, prevent, or hinder. It is the supreme power of God that enables Him to use the sins of the world for His glory and exultation. It is this glorious truth that enables Him to use wretched, wicked, defunct sinners like you, me, and Moses for His glory!

So, get up, get out there, and serve Jesus! Repent of your sins, cast off your old self, and strive to fulfill the revealed will of God according to His good and sovereign purpose.

Brothers Hug

This week the wayward brother meets the other wayward brother, and nothing is as it seems...

After weeks of preparing and divine intervention, it all comes down to chapter 33. You simply will not want to miss the conclusion of Jacob's encounter with Esau, as it is the perhaps the most revealing and confirming part of the story. All of the events leading up to this encounter have not been for naught, nor have they been what all have expected. Instead, everything has been merely a preparation and preview for this radical encounter between two brothers' past, and two brothers' futures.

Not only will there be exciting drama this week, but more importantly, there will be radical and poignant application. Like Jacob, your life is not an accident, nor is it filled with mistakes that God cannot use for His glory and purpose. You have been intentionally created by God and it is not until we trust Him that reconciliation and peace occur.

See you Sunday!

Fire Rescue

A friend of the FHCC family has lost all that she has in a fire. She currently owns nothing but the clothes on her back, and she needs help. While it looks like the insurance company will be able to get her back on her feet, it can take several weeks to accomplish this week. Even then, however, there are limits to what insurance companies will compensate. The bottom line is that this woman needs the help of the church!

We will be taking a special offering on Monday night @ our UNplugged service to purchase a Visa gift card. Also, we will be sending a care package full of clothing that YOU will donate. She needs everything from t-shirts (size XXL), to jeans (size 22), to whatever other basic item you can contribute. All items must be turned in to the FHCC Campus by Thursday night, July 22nd, as we will mail the items out on FRIDAY.
