UNdone: Prayer

It’s been an amazing week of prayer and worship. The Holy Spirit is truly having His way with our church as people continue to give their life to the Lord, grow closer to Jesus and see the glory of God being displayed. We pray that as a church we would not take this for granted but continue the work of God as we mature as Christians, and develop a genuine relationship with God.

This week we will continue to step outside of the box and allow God to move freely in our lives and in our prayers.

For most people prayer is viewed as a wish list. The more I talk to people the more I see it. However, I don’t think people really get what it’s all about. Prayer is a conversation with God, and like any conversation it requires not only speaking but listening.

Unfortunately, most of us choose to use that time to simply tell God all the things we want from the Lord, as if Jesus were Santa Claus or some magic Genie. Some of us don’t even go so far as to say “God I want or Lord I need or Jesus please help me achieve this or that.” We just simply have hopes and dreams, never truly acknowledging God but just assume that we have prayed because we desire these things. Therefore, God has heard our prayer. That’s not prayer.

Don’t get me wrong, the Lord knows your inner most thoughts and can see your hearts desire but stopping to pray and talk to Jesus is an act and demonstration of your faith in God. In doing so you’re showing God that you trust and love the Lord. If you don’t believe me just look at the relationships you have with the people you love. When they take the time out to share with you these desires that you already know about, or when they trust in you seeking counsel and advice, how does that make you feel? Does that not demonstrate to you their faith in you and their love for you?

More importantly, let us not take for granted how great is our God. Every person has been given the opportunity by the power of the Holy Spirit to sit down and have a conversation with God. Why waste that opportunity by asking God to make us successful, or to have better things? We can achieve those things on our own by simply working hard, getting a vision for it, putting our mind to it and challenging ourselves. Don’t believe me look at the Godless world around us. Clearly, you don’t need Jesus to achieve success by the world’s standards.

Why not take that opportunity to develop a real relationship with Jesus. Let’s show the Lord how grateful we are by stopping and telling Him. Greater than that, lets ask God to reveal Himself to us. Let’s open up are hearts, our minds, and our ears to hear the voice of God. Come down this Monday at 7pm and witness the power of the Holy Spirit as we become UNdone before the Lord.

Break Free: Women's Bible Study

“We’ve got to pray just to make it today.” MC Hammer sure hit the nail on the head there. The opportunities to sin are endless, we are pressed from every side with one temptation after another and as if that wasn’t hard enough, then we hear a voice whisper, “what makes you think you can handle this? I mean, look at your track record. Why do you even bother trying to follow God’s will for your life?”

Sure sounds like spiritual captivity if you ask me. We’ve been talking about it for a month now, and as much as we’ve learned, our understanding means jack squat without us putting it in action. As Beth Moore pointed out in our lesson, prayer changes passions. Isn’t that what we long for, to have God’s desires become our desires? To have our ways transformed to His ways?

Whatever area you’re struggling with, I’m begging you, get down on your knees before the Almighty God and tell Him what’s going on! Tell Him your fears, tell Him your flaws, tell Him your doubts. Don’t think for a second that the God who made you and died for you doesn’t love you enough or isn’t powerful enough to come to your aid. Jesus said “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10, ESV) Girlfriend, he’s talking about you and your life! He wants you to have a life full of His presence! Make sure you spend time reading His Word and pouring out your heart to Him today and every day.

(Also, do your homework!)

UNleashed Preview

UNleashed is going to be a little different this week. If you were at service this past Sunday or listened to the podcast, you know that our church has been called to dedicate this week to prayer, so we’re responding by dropping everything and dropping to our knees to corporately seek God’s face.

We all hear those stories of miracles happening when someone prays. People who are on their deathbed puzzle doctors by recovering overnight when last rites had been given and there was supposedly no hope. The family struggling to make ends meet prays and finds a check from a complete stranger in their mailbox for exactly the amount they need. The car running on empty in the middle of nowhere makes it another 80 miles to the nearest gas station.

The stories I’ve listed above have actually happened to people I know. The gas tank story happened to my dad and me while we were driving through the desert in Eastern Oregon in 2002. Although they defy science and logic, these stories are true, and I can say confidently to you that when you pray, God listens. He hears the cries of those who need help, and pours out mercy on those who ask in His Name.

Hebrews 4:14-16 says this: “Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

Who better to have on your side when making a request than Jesus the Messiah? He lived a real, human life, complete with suffering and temptation to sin. Let’s draw ourselves to Him as a Church; the Bride He loves so dearly. When He answers, let’s be sure to thank Him and to tell of His wonderful works as we studied last week in Psalm 105. Till then, pray without ceasing.

See you on Thursday,
-Johanna

Sunday Recap and Monday Preview

Hey team, if you missed church Sunday @ the Midway, then you missed something special. It is not that the Lord was anymore present or speaking this weekend than any other, it is just that it is was made manifest in a unique way. For starters, we had a tremendous worship experience. Yes, it was great that our good friend, Josh, was present to lead us, but more importantly we "lingered." There was no rush to get through worship; rather, people accepted worship for what it is and allowed God to speak to them while singing to Him. This same experience should happen every week, with or without, regardless of the worship method or style. We need to be hungry for an encounter with God.

Following a great worship set, it was time for the Word. I had 8-pages of notes and we only made it through the first page. God spoke to all of us about the importance of prayer, and then called us to do it. Prayer changes things, and God really wants to change some of your lives and perspectives on life. He called us out this Sunday morning, and we are dedicating every event this week in response. God has specifically called FHCC to pray this week, and we will obey.

Join us Monday night for a very, very special UNdone and UNplugged. We will kick off with UNdone: Prayer Service at 7pm, and we spend the majority of our time praying for one another's needs and corporate worship. Following this time, we will move into our 8pm service, UNplugged. As usual, we will spend a some time in the Word, but it will be brief as the majority of the time will be focused on prayer and intercession. (Intercession is simply a term to describe praying for the needs of others. In this case, we will be praying for our city, our loved ones, and the future of the church.) You do not want to miss this opportunity for personal and corporate growth. I truly believe we are going to see MIRACLES take place.

See you for prayer!

Sunday Preview

Life is hard, and being a Christian does not make exempt us from challenges, difficulties or disappointments. Jesus said in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble;" and that statement has certainly been true since Genesis chapter 3. God’s people are always surrounded by the primary cause of evil: temptation. Temptation is not sin, but it does produce trouble & hardship, and when given into become sin with even greater, more horrific consequences. This is life; this is reality, and this is the challenge we ALL face at seemingly every moment of our existence. But what does this mean for a Christian? Do we have a hope, a deliverance from this burden of struggle, or are we in the same boat to suffer the same fate as the non-Christian?

Looking back at the words of Jesus in John 16:33, Jesus not only confirmed the difficulty of living in this world, but He made the defining statement that distinguishes Christian suffering from that of the world’s. “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." Being a Christian does not exempt us from trial, but it does give us a way out of suffering in its effects.

Join us this Sunday as we examine the life of Isaac and Rebekah. Here we will see a young couple blessed by God, but struggling in some of the most extreme circumstances. How will they respond? Will the behave like their parents, or will they turn to God in faith? Will God deliver out of the trial, or will He sustain them through the trial? Why must this life be so hard?

Good questions demand good answers. See you Sunday at 10am!

Break Free: Women's Bible Study

The topic is truth: your perception of “truth” vs. God’s reality of truth. We’ve been studying being set free from spiritual captivity, and a common hindrance to our walk with the Messiah is self-delusion. We deceive ourselves when we think we can manage sin; that it’s small enough in our lives that we can contain it, conceal it, or ignore it.

So how do we find genuine truth? It may sound like a Sunday School answer, but we turn to the Word of God. Beth was very adamant about the importance of spending time reading the Bible. She illustrated with a story I will attempt to relay here:

Beth lives in a part of Texas infested with rattlesnakes. Her husband insisted that she learn to shoot a rifle and take it with her on her walks around their ranch, lest she should come across a rattlesnake when she is alone.

She explained that if she across a rattlesnake, pointed her rifle at it, and didn’t load it with a bullet, she would be entirely ineffective at scaring off her venomous foe. Likewise, coming across another Serpent, one needs to be armed, ready to pull the trigger!

The Word of God is a mighty weapon, and no feel-good experience can replace its ability to cut down the enemy and reveal God’s truth. It’s critical to your spiritual health to read the Bible daily so you can defend yourself against the advances of the enemy.

Our “truth” is built on our experiences and our environment. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and His word never returns void. Remember that the Lord is more powerful to free you than your “truth” is to keep you captive.

“So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’” - John 8:31-32

UNdone Recap

Wow! Last night was pure fire. The Lord was moving and speaking to and through so many hearts & minds last night. The night started out with a reading from Psalm 66 which lead us into an amazing time of prayer, praise and worship:

Shout for joy to God, all the earth;
Sing the glory of his name;
Give to him glorious praise!
Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds!”

And we truly praised how awesome is our God that He does not hide His face from us, that He has given us all that we will ever need and want, from breath in our lungs, a heart to love, and a mind to think and discern His ways. God has given us everything we ever need. Not a single one of us has asked to be born. Yet God put you here out of His great love. So many of us spend our lives running from God and running towards the things of this world, yet the things of this world are fleeting. We are but ashes and dust. Everything that we long for will one day fade away but God is forever, and His love is eternal! We long for riches, wealth & fame while along the way we consume our life with sin. We ignore God and our sin yet still He loves us.

God loves you so much that Jesus came down to die for the sins of every man, woman, and child, yet we ignore Him. We take for granted all that He is, all that He said, and all that He has done. How many of us would choose to die in such a way for the salvation of the world. Even you are so foolish as to say “I will”, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God so none of us is even worthy to commit such an act. But Jesus, the God of the Bible is worthy of all praise and honor. Jesus is the way, the truth & the life. It is through his death & resurrection that we find our redemption and reconciliation with God. He has given us His word & His Spirit that we may know his name. How awesome are your deeds o’God!

You may not understand what this is all about but what’s holding you back from finding out? We use the excuse that we’ve been scorned by religion, but this isn’t about religion. Religion won’t save us from a fallen and broken world.

The truth is we don’t want to come face to face with our God or our sin because every single one of us knows that we are guilty. This world is the way it is not because of God but because of our own sin. But rather than walk in guilt and shame or worse run from and ignore the truth, will you come down to the Campus next Monday at 7pm and find out what this is all about as we become UNdone before the Lord.

UNplugged and You

What an amazing passage of Scripture this week! Following up on the death of Abraham in chapter 25, this week we look a little bit closer at the events surrounding his death, namely the participation of his two sons of blessing, Isaac and Ishmael. While it is clear from Scripture that Isaac is the chosen vessel for God's covenant, God does not ignore Ishmael, but also blesses him with much earthly wealth and prosperity. In fact, much of the blessing of Ishmael is still taking place today in the rapid and vast expansion of the Arab nations. It is wild to think that God would bless a man of iniquity and an ever present threat to His covenant and people?

Join us Monday night for an incredible Bible Study like no other. Gather with us as we take a hard look at the blessings of God and the purpose behind all of His blessings. What we all need to know is that God is sovereign and is active in the life of every person on this planet. He is extracting His glory from your life, but it may not be for your glory. Come discover the active role God is playing in your life, and its eternal consequences.

As always, your questions will be welcome, and we love it when you bring a friend. See you at 8pm for UNplugged!

UNdone: Prayer

If my people pray…

A little over a year ago I hopped on a bus from NYC and headed into Philly. Now, for those of you that know me, you know that this isn’t anything out of the ordinary. I mean, seriously, one time in back in high school I felt like a Cheese steak, so I went straight to Geno’s and came straight home. But, this time was different. So much so that a picture I took that day is the wallpaper on my cell phone. What made this particular trip so different? It was an answer to my prayer.

You see, at that point, although I was a Christian, I was VERY far from God. Things were happening that were beyond my control and far beyond my understanding. It took everything I had in me just to keep it together, which I wasn’t doing a very good job of. So I went to Pastor Jeremy and asked “How do we fix me?” His answer, of course, was that “we” don’t. We “tap out”, go to Jesus and let him do his thing. Being fairly new to this whole Christianity thing, I had no idea what that meant. Really, I didn’t even know how to pray.

Then came the day I reached my breaking point. A friend had sent me a MySpace video centered around Romans 3:23 (“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”), filled with images of a young girl going through many of the same things I struggled with before becoming a Christian, and it hit me hard. A lot harder than I’m sure he intended. That was the proverbial “last straw”.

So, that night, without even meaning to, I prayed - literally crying out to God “I don’t know what to do! Just tell me what you want me to do!” And He did. As clearly as if someone were in the room with me, I was told “Go!” (Lech-Lecha for all you Genesis lovers out there.) Of course, at this point I’m thinking “Great Cat, as if people don’t think you’re crazy enough, now you’re hearing voices!” But, nevertheless, I went.

When I got off the bus, staring at Independence Hall, I literally had my breath taken away for the second time in my life (the first is another story for another time). And in that moment I knew (that I knew that I knew) that God had answered my prayer.

Now, we flash forward a full year, where I have the honor and privilege of co-facilitating UNdone, our Monday night corporate prayer service at FHCC. And week after week I am blown away by the power of prayer, something that most of us (all of us, at one time or another, if we’re really honest) take for granted. So, for those of you who are ready to “tap out” and let Jesus do His thing, come down to the FHCC Campus (67-08 Ingram St. in Forest Hills) THIS Monday at 7pm…

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” ~2 Chronicles 7:14

UNleashed Recap

“What has God accomplished in your life?” It’s a big question that’s asked frequently, and with good reason. The book of Psalms repeatedly instructs us to “tell of His wondrous works” (we in the modern church call “witnessing”). Many of the people who attend Forest Hills Community Church are diligently obeying that charge, sharing the stories of how God has changed their life with practically everyone they meet. Which stories do we tell, though? Do we tell the same three stories again and again, or do we see how God is working in our lives every single day?

To be clear, I’m not suggesting that you shouldn’t tell the testimony of how you first accepted Jesus. What I am suggesting is that you look at the many blessings of God and the protection He has granted you, and maybe share that once in a while as well. You see, God doesn’t just save you once, He keeps on saving you… which makes perfect sense because you don’t stop sinning altogether once you become a Christian. You are constantly in need of the saving power of Jesus the Messiah, and He is faithful to provide grace to those who come humbly with broken, contrite hearts.

But Johanna, UNleashed is about worship and you’re talking about sin and repentance.

Yes, I am. Remember, people who haven’t been radically saved by God can’t really worship Him. They don’t have any genuine reason to thank Him. Christians, however, have accepted salvation and therefore have every reason to worship the One True God.

One thing that I love about UNleashed is the discussion, and seeing you find practical application through the Word of God to instruct you in how you live a life of worship. This week at UNleashed we’ll be studying Psalm 105:1-5, in which David praises God for taking care of Israel, His chosen people. As someone with a covenantal relationship with God, what has He accomplished in your life?

Sunday Preview

This Sunday we move on from Father Abraham, and unto his two more prolific boys, Ishmael and Isaac. The relationship between these two has been awkward and strained at best, but this week they gather together to bury their dad and fulfill their destinies. It would seem that peace may have finally reached between the two siblings; but, no luck. The feud and contrast is as pitched as ever.

Join us Sunday inside the Midway Movie Theater as we begin a new series inside the book of Genesis entitled, "Sibling Rivalry." It is not that God desires for there to be tension amongst family, but often it is the case as each person seemingly tries to live in competition with the other. Learn how to overcome the urge to compete and to find rest and fulfillment in the family of God.

UNleashed Returns

There are countless songs about rejoicing in the Lord and how He has made me glad, or how I‘ve got the joy (joy, joy, joy, joy) down in my heart. Why is it so rare, then, to see someone crack a smile during a worship service? It’s overwhelmingly more common to see people sobbing, and while there are definitely times of worship that should result in remorse and repentance that will cause an emotional response, where is the unspeakable joy that the Bible mentions?

Do we forget that Jesus rose from the dead? Do we neglect that our lives have been transformed by a God who desires to know us intimately? Is that transformation not worth celebrating? Do we think that if we don’t end up with tears rolling down our cheeks that we didn’t worship hard enough?

This week, we’ll be studying Psalm 104:31-35, where God is praised for His creation. The word “rejoice” occurs twice in this brief passage, which should get your attention. Since we’re supposed to be rejoicing, let’s be sure we do it in a way that is pleasing to God. We should make time to enjoy the presence of the Lord, and that’s exactly what we’ll be doing this Thursday night.

Women's Bible Study

The Dog Ate My Bible Study Homework.

With the overhaul at the campus last week, we were forced to cancel all Bible studies, including our women’s Bible study, Breaking Free. I hope all my sisters have been doing their homework! With a week off, it’s easy to fall behind in your disciplines, and I pray that hasn’t been the case for you.

In our homework, we’ve been studying five benefits of our covenant relationship with God:
  • Benefit 1: To know God and believe Him
  • Benefit 2: To glorify God
  • Benefit 3: To find satisfaction in God
  • Benefit 4: To experience God’s peace
  • Benefit 5: To enjoy God’s presence
I’m sure that if you’ve been doing your homework, you’ve probably been blown away by something God revealed to you in each lesson. If you haven’t been doing your homework, I assure you, you’re not alone. It can be incredibly challenging to stay tuned in to your work, especially if there are outside distractions or if it’s not resonating with you entirely. I want to encourage you to turn off the television, the computer and the phone, put a “do not disturb” sign on your door, and pray that the Holy Spirit will show you something new as you spend time in the Word.

Looking forward to seeing you on Thursday at our lovely, newly renovated campus!

UNplugged Recap

What a fantastic night we had at UNplugged this week! Not only were the renovations to the campus an added benefit, but more importantly the level of dialogue was outstanding!! I am so blessed to be the pastor and member of a church where people are hungry for God and are desperate to understand and apply His word to their lives.

I had anticipated spending most of the evening talking on the salvation of Abraham after his death, but our people kept extracting more and more content from the preceding text. In short, what resulted from tonight's discussion was the following truths:

1 - The Bible is first and foremost a theology book. All of its content deals with who God is, and who we are in relationship to Him.

2 - We are saved by the will and actions of God, not the will and actions of ourselves.

3 - The salvation of God should cause us to lives of constant praise and repentance. If we have truly been elected by God solely because of His will and love for us, then we should be His most dedicated and humble servants. We must never grow tired or complacent for His love and favor, for in so doing we cast doubt upon our justification.

4 - Christians are not perfect, but they do the perfect thing: THEY REPENT!!!

It was a fantastic night that ended with hours of worship in the presence of the Lord. Again, I am honored to be your pastor and brother in the family of God. I'm looking forward to a phenomenal report for those who attended to hear of what God is doing through you and who else the Lord has saved in your life.

Sunday Preview

This Sunday we are back to the Genesis narrative and back to our man of the covenant, Abraham. It's been a wild ride with our old friend, as we have witnessed his forsaking of his homeland, pimping out his wife to a Pharaoh, ride off to war like Clint Eastwood and ransack the leading empire of the time, have multiple encounters with God, take a concubine, snip his manhood, feed God lunch, pimp out his wife a second time, become a dad at the age of 100, nearly kill his only son, negotiate a burial site with Zach Efron's great-granddad and play matchmaker for his kid. It's been an adventurous life, but it all ends this week...or does it???

Join us this week at we take at look at the events surrounding the death of Abraham. See a man's whose life was anything but perfect, yet was counted as blessed by God more than any other person in history. Even in his death, Abraham, serves as an example of hope and promise for all of us who have been granted a relationship with the Living God and His Son, Jesus.

Flooring Issues

As you know, the church campus is going through major renovations this week to not only improve safety and efficiency, but also provide more seating room and a better worship experience. A big part of this upgrade, therefore, deals with the flooring. Not only is the floor uneven, but also corroded. It is a shear miracle that a tragedy has not occurred at this location.

Please pray for the construction guys today. They are doing some very dangerous procedures that not only puts their lives at risk, but also the campus itself, temporarily.

God has been very good to us over the course of this renovation, and has granted complete favor with our landlord. We know that this whole operation is for His glory and the furthering of His Kingdom. Pray, therefore, that no obstacle would hinder His success.

Campus Construction

Three weeks ago we were hit with news that our entire storefront frame and windows would need to be replaced. This was not the fault of us, or our landlord, but simply that of nature and ground settlement. And just like events in your life, this one project resulted in the need to update several other features of the church. ("Snowball Effect")

Worry not, FHCC, God is in control and a new Campus is coming that will result in more seating space, better efficiency, and an incredible worship experience. Pray for us and all the people involved in this intense upgrade.

Be the Church

This week the FHCC Campus is closed for renovations. As a result, all of our scheduled bible studies for the week are postponed. While we are all disappointed at the thought of our routine being disturbed, we need to be worried that ministry and fellowship should cease for a week. It's time like this when we should thrive as the church.

The building closure does not mean that the church should cease to worship, minister, or fellowship. Instead, the opposite should happen in that we conduct worship in an even greater evangelistic fashion by doing ministry in our homes, our favorite coffee shop, or online with those who do not typically attend church services. Let's allow this temporary disruption to cause us to scatter outside our routine and lead our own mini-bible studies. Let's be the church!

Take a moment right now and ask the Lord to show you how you should be the church this week. Ask Him to answer the following questions:
  1. Should I lead a group bible study, or help construct one with a friend to lead?
  2. Who does God want to save this week?
  3. When and Where should be hold this 1-hour (MAX!) Bible study?

When you have reached your conclusions, visit the FHCC UNplugged Notes page and download the week that is most appropriate for your audience. Invite your friends and be the church.

And remember, we're here to help!

PS> 75% of people will typically come to a Bible Study their FRIEND is leading. So, do not worry if they have not come in the past. This is a new and awesome opportunity!

Sweeten Family News

The Sweeten clan is pleased to announce it's newest arrival! Baby boy #3 arrived early this week, is home, and both mommy and baby are doing great. (FYI, Daddy and the two big brothers are cool too.)

Thank you all for your prayers and support!
